What It Is

This is a replacement primer bulb for Briggs & Stratton engines (and compatible clones) that primes the carburetor with fuel before starting. It’s a small red rubber bulb you press to force gas into the carb bowl, eliminating the need to pull the starter rope repeatedly on a dry engine. Common on walk-behind mowers, pressure washers, and small generators.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, check three things:

  1. OEM part numbers – Briggs & Stratton 694394, 4178, 494408, 5084. If your engine uses any of these, it fits.
  2. Physical size – Bulb diameter is ~0.75 in, stem length ~0.5 in. Measure your old bulb’s stem length and hole diameter to confirm.
  3. Carburetor type – Works with plastic or metal float-style carbs common on 3.5–10 hp Briggs engines (e.g., 120000, 130000, 190000 series). Not for Nikki, Walbro, or Keihin carbs unless they use the same part number.

Tip: If your mower model number isn’t listed, remove the old bulb and compare stem diameter (the hole it plugs into) – this is the most common mismatch.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality – Zip8-Zip is an aftermarket brand. Expect decent rubber, but not identical to OEM Briggs. Some users report a slightly softer feel – still works fine for priming.
  • Installation – Takes 2 minutes. Pop the old bulb out with a flathead screwdriver, push the new one in until it seats. No tools needed.
  • Common gotcha – If the new bulb won’t stay in, the carburetor’s plastic retainer ring might be cracked. You may need a new carb or retainer, not just a bulb.
  • Lifespan – Usually lasts 1–2 seasons. Ethanol-blended fuel can soften the rubber faster; use fuel stabilizer to extend life.

Should You Buy It

If your Briggs engine won’t prime and the old bulb is cracked, stiff, or missing, this is a cheap, easy fix. Works for most common walk-behind mowers and small engines with the listed part numbers. Not for high-end commercial mowers or non-Briggs carbs – stick with OEM for those.
