The AUTOKAY 799868 carburetor is a direct replacement for the OEM carb on many 4-7 hp small engines (Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, MTD, Murray, and others) used in walk-behind mowers, tillers, and generators. It’s a no-choke carburetor, meaning it relies on a primer bulb for cold starts.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, check your engine’s model, type, and code numbers (stamped on the blower housing or valve cover). This carb replaces OEM numbers: 799868, 694202, 693909, 692648, 499617, 497586, 498254, 497314, 497347, 497410, 799872, 790821, 498255, 498966. It fits engines from 4 to 7 hp with a vertical or horizontal shaft, typically with a 3/4" to 1" mounting flange. If your engine has a choke lever (not a primer bulb), this carb won’t work. Measure the mounting bolt spacing (usually 2.5" center-to-center) and intake port diameter (about 1") to confirm. Not for use on engines with a separate choke plate or automatic choke.
Key Things to Know
- No choke = primer bulb only. If your original carb had a choke rod or cable, this won’t connect to it. You must use the primer bulb to start.
- Comes with gaskets but no fuel line or filter. Reuse your old ones or buy separately if worn.
- Installation difficulty: Moderate. You’ll need to remove the old carb, clean the intake, and adjust the idle mixture screw (usually 1.5 turns out from lightly seated). Expect 20-40 minutes.
- Common gotcha: The float bowl may be slightly different depth than OEM. If the engine floods, check the float height (should be parallel to the bowl rim) and ensure the needle valve isn’t stuck.
Should You Buy It
If your 4-7 hp engine has a primer bulb and no choke, and you’re on a tight budget, this is a solid, functional replacement. It won’t match OEM quality for long-term durability (plastic parts, thinner gaskets), but it’s cheap and works for most mowers, tillers, and generators. For occasional use or a quick fix, it’s a good buy. For heavy commercial use, stick with OEM.
