This is a 5-terminal ignition switch with keys, designed to replace OEM part numbers 925-04659 and 725-04659. It controls power to the starter, ignition coil, and safety circuits on gas-powered lawn tractors and zero-turn mowers from MTD, Craftsman, Ariens, Bad Boy, Murray, Sabre, Scotts, and Yard Machines.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm your machine uses a 5-terminal switch (not 3, 4, or 6-terminal). Check your original part number—if it ends in 925-04659 or 725-04659, this is a direct fit. This switch is common on 1990s–2010s MTD-built tractors with single-cylinder engines (Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki). It does not fit older Murray or Craftsman models with round metal can-style switches (those use 2-3 terminals). Measure the mounting hole diameter (must be ~1.5 inches) and the flat blade terminal width (~0.25 inches). If your mower has a separate key safety interlock module, this switch may not include that feature.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: Solid aftermarket part for the price. The plastic housing is durable, but the key may feel slightly looser than OEM. Works fine for most users.
- Installation: Moderate difficulty. You’ll need a multimeter to verify terminal positions (B, S, L, M, G) if you don’t have a wiring diagram. Label wires before removing the old switch.
- Common gotcha: Some MTD/Craftsman models use a different key profile (round vs. rectangular). This switch includes two standard rectangular keys. If your mower uses a “safety” key with a chip, this won’t work.
- Fitment note: Will not work on newer (post-2015) Bad Boy or Ariens zero-turns that use a 6-terminal switch with a starter solenoid relay.
Should You Buy It
Yes, if you need a direct replacement for a worn-out 5-terminal switch on an older MTD, Craftsman, Murray, or similar lawn tractor. It’s a budget-friendly fix that works as intended. Skip it if your machine requires a safety interlock key or a 6-terminal switch.
