Robotic Mower Winter Storage & Off-Season Care

Pre-Winter Shutdown: When and How to Stop
The first rule of winter storage is timing. Stop mowing when grass growth slows to near-zero, typically when soil temperatures stay below 5°C (41°F) for a week. For most of the US and Europe, that’s mid-October to early November. Running the mower on wet, frosty grass damages the blades, motor, and chassis.
Final mow procedure: Let the mower finish its last cycle on a dry day. Then manually set it to “Park” or “Home” on the charging station. Do not let it run overnight in cold rain—water ingress through seams or the charging contacts is a real risk.
For wire-guided mowers (Husqvarna Automower, Worx Landroid): Leave the boundary wire in place over winter. Disconnecting it is unnecessary and risks broken connectors or accidental cuts. Just unplug the charging station from mains power—but first, note the exact wire layout if you plan to move the station indoors. For RTK mowers (Segway Navimow, Mammotion Luba), the RTK reference station and charging station can stay outside if they’re IPX5 or better, but bringing them inside extends their life.
Cleaning and Inspection: The Non-Negotiable Steps
Grass clippings, mud, and sap are corrosive. A dirty mower stored for 3-4 months will develop rust on blades, seized wheel motors, and degraded seals.
Step-by-step cleaning:
- Flip the mower onto its side (gasoline models only—for battery mowers, keep upright or tilt no more than 45° to avoid battery acid leakage). Remove the blade disc or cutting plate.
- Scrub the underside with a stiff nylon brush and warm, soapy water. Avoid high-pressure washers—water forced into bearings kills them. For stubborn grass, use a plastic scraper.
- Clean the charging contacts with a dry cloth and fine sandpaper (400 grit) only if they show corrosion. Apply a thin film of dielectric grease to prevent oxidation.
- Inspect the blade disc for cracks, bent blades, or missing screws. Replace blades now, not in spring when you’re impatient. For Husqvarna Automower, use genuine blades (e.g., 579 88 66-01 for 305/310 models). For Worx Landroid, the standard 20-blade pack (WA0805) works for most models. Segway Navimow uses a 3-blade disc—check for warping.
- Check wheel bearings by spinning each wheel. Grinding or wobbling means replacement. Mammotion Luba owners: the wheel hub seals are known to dry out—apply silicone grease to the axle.
Battery Care: The Make-or-Break Step
Lithium-ion batteries (all modern robot mowers) degrade fastest at full charge or full discharge. The ideal storage charge is 50-70%.
For removable batteries (Worx Landroid, some Husqvarna models): Remove the battery from the mower. Store it at room temperature (15-20°C / 59-68°F) in a dry location. Never store on concrete—place on a shelf or in a plastic bin. Check voltage every 6-8 weeks; if it drops below 30%, charge back to 50-60%.
For non-removable batteries (Segway Navimow, Mammotion Luba, most Husqvarna Automower): You cannot remove the battery. The best approach: run the mower manually until the battery shows 50-60% on the app, then turn it off. Do not leave it connected to the charger for months—trickle charging over winter can overcharge and swell the pack. Unplug the charging station. If you have a Husqvarna Automower with a “Storage Mode” in the app (e.g., 450XH), activate it—it discharges to safe voltage.
Temperature warning: Do not store any lithium battery below -10°C (14°F). If your garage is unheated, bring the mower indoors. Freezing a fully charged battery can cause permanent capacity loss or internal short circuits.
Storage Location: Indoor vs. Outdoor
Indoor (best): A dry basement, heated garage, or closet. Humidity below 60% RH. Avoid damp basements—use a dehumidifier or place the mower on a pallet. For wire-guided mowers, coil the boundary wire loosely and store with the mower.
Outdoor (only if necessary): Use a waterproof, breathable cover (not plastic—it traps condensation). The charging station must be unplugged. For RTK mowers, the reference station can stay outside, but wrap the antenna connector with self-amalgamating tape to prevent moisture ingress. Slope warning: If your yard has slopes >25%, the mower’s wheel motors and traction are stressed—store indoors to avoid bearing corrosion.
Specific brand notes:
- Husqvarna Automower: The charging station base plate can warp in direct sunlight—store it upside down or indoors.
- Worx Landroid: The power adapter is not weatherproof. Unplug and bring inside. The boundary wire can stay—just tape the ends.
- Segway Navimow: The RTK antenna has a magnetic base—remove the antenna and store indoors. The charging station is IPX5 but the AC adapter is not.
- Mammotion Luba: The RTK station is IPX6—safe to leave outside, but the charging station’s contact pins are exposed. Cover with a plastic bag (ventilated) to avoid ice buildup.
Spring Wake-Up: 7-Step Checklist
- Inspect the mower for rodent damage (chewed wires, nesting in the chassis). Check the blade disc for rust.
- Install a fresh blade set. Dull blades tear grass, causing brown tips.
- Charge the battery to 100% if removable. If non-removable, plug in and wait for full charge—do not use until it reaches 100%.
- Re-install boundary wire if you moved it. Check for breaks with a wire break detector (e.g., EL-002 for Husqvarna). For RTK mowers, verify the antenna is level and unobstructed.
- Test manually—push the mower 10 feet. If wheels drag or make noise, lubricate axles with silicone spray.
- Run a calibration cycle (all mowers have this in the app or via menu). For Mammotion Luba, this includes RTK mapping re-sync.
- Set the mowing schedule to start at 50% of your normal height for the first week. Gradually lower to desired height.
