Boundary Systems: Wire vs. RTK (No-Wire)
The boundary system affects where the mower can go – and therefore where children and pets might encounter it.

The mower detects the wire’s magnetic field and stops or reverses. If the wire is cut (e.g., by a shovel), the mower may leave the yard. - RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) systems (Segway Navimow, Mammotion Luba): No boundary wire. Instead, a GPS base station and satellite correction provide centimeter-level positioning. The mower creates a virtual boundary map. No wire to trip over or cut. However, if GPS signal is lost (e.g., under dense trees or near tall buildings), the mower may stop or drift outside the map. This is rare but possible.
Which is safer? RTK systems eliminate the trip hazard of boundary wire, which is a benefit for small children and pets. However, wire systems are more predictable in poor GPS conditions. For a yard with trees or a narrow side passage, wire may be more reliable.
Slope and Terrain Safety
Robotic mowers are rated for specific slope percentages. Exceeding them can cause the mower to tip, slide, or lose traction – potentially rolling into a child or pet.
- Husqvarna Automower (e.g., 450X) handles up to 70% slope (35°) on the sides and 45% (24°) on the front/back. On slopes above 50%, the mower may struggle with wet grass.
