  • Pegs/staples: UV-resistant plastic pegs (included with most mowers). Avoid metal staples—they corrode and short the wire.
  • Wire connectors: Waterproof gel-filled connectors (included). Do not use electrical tape.
  • Wire cutter/stripper: A simple tool for clean cuts.
  • Spade or edger: For burying wire (optional but recommended for aesthetics and protection).

3. Planning the Loop

Before you dig:

  • Trace the boundary: Walk the perimeter with a garden hose or string. Mark corners, obstacles, and narrow points. The mower needs at least 2-3 ft of clearance around obstacles (check your manual—Worx requires 2 ft, Husqvarna 3 ft).
  • Slope limits: Most wire-based mowers handle up to 25% slope (14°). RTK models like Mammotion Luba can handle 45% (24°). For wire on slopes >15%, peg the wire at 6-inch intervals to prevent slippage.
  • Narrow passages: If your lawn has a path under 4 ft wide, the wire must be run in a “channel” (two parallel wires 1-2 ft apart) so the mower can navigate. This doubles the wire length in that section.

4. Installation Steps (Wire-Based)

Step 1: Lay out the wire loosely.

  • Unroll the wire along your planned path. Do not stretch it—leave slack (especially at corners) to allow for contraction in cold weather.
  • At corners, make a wide curve (radius 1-2 ft) rather than a sharp 90° turn. Sharp bends cause signal loss.

Step 2: Secure the wire.

  • For temporary installation (testing), use pegs every 2-3 ft. For permanent, bury 1-2 inches deep using a spade or a dedicated wire burier tool.
  • On slopes: Bury deeper (2-3 inches) and peg every 12 inches. Use landscape fabric staples if soil is loose.

Step 3: Connect to the base station.

  • Most base stations have screw terminals or spring clips. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation, insert, and tighten.
  • Important: The wire must form a single continuous loop. If you cut the wire for obstacles, you must splice it back. Use only the brand’s connectors—they are gel-filled and waterproof.

Step 4: Test the loop.

  • Connect the base station to power and check the LED. On Husqvarna, a solid green light means the loop is good. On Worx, the base station will beep.
  • Use a multimeter to check resistance. A typical 800 ft loop should read 5-15 ohms. Higher resistance indicates a break or poor connection.

Step 5: Splice and repair.

  • If you cut the wire accidentally, strip 1/2 inch on both ends, insert into a gel connector, and crimp with pliers. Waterproof connectors are essential—exposed wire corrodes in weeks.
  • For long runs (over 1,000 ft), some brands (Husqvarna) require a signal amplifier. Check your manual.

5. Special Considerations for Brands

  • Husqvarna Automower (300/400 series): Requires the wire to be at least 3 ft from the base station before any turns. The base station emits a guide signal that the mower follows to return. Keep the guide wire straight for the first 10 ft.
  • Worx Landroid: Uses a single wire loop (no separate guide wire). The base station is part of the loop. The wire must be laid flat on the ground (not buried) for the first 5 ft from the base to allow the mower to dock.
  • Segway Navimow (wire-based model): The wire must be 4 inches from any hard surface (patio, driveway). The base station should be on level ground within 10 ft of a power outlet.
  • Mammotion Luba (RTK): No wire. Place the RTK base station on a roof or pole at least 6 ft high, with a clear 360° view of the sky. The mower uses its own GPS and the base station’s corrections. You map the lawn in the app—no physical installation.
