What It Is

This is a replacement spindle assembly for the 42-inch cutting decks on select MTD, Troy-Bilt, and Cub Cadet lawn tractors, and for 60-inch decks on Cub Cadet ZT1 zero-turn mowers. It drives the mower blade, and is designed for homeowners repairing worn or damaged spindles rather than heavy-duty commercial use.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, verify three things:

  • Deck size & model: This assembly fits 42-inch decks on models like the LTX1040, LTX1042, and LT2000 series, plus 60-inch decks on ZT1-60 zero-turn mowers. It does not fit 46-inch or 50-inch decks.
  • OEM part numbers: It directly replaces OEM numbers 618-04822, 618-04889, 618-04950, 918-04822, 918-04822B, 918-04889, and 918-04950. If your original part number matches any of these, it’s compatible.
  • Physical check: Measure the spindle shaft diameter (typically 5/8-inch) and bolt pattern (three mounting holes, 3.5-inch center-to-center). If your old spindle matches, this will work. The assembly includes the pulley, housing, bearings, and shaft—no need to buy separate parts.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality is decent for the price. The bearings are sealed and pre-lubricated, but not as durable as OEM Cub Cadet spindles. Expect 1–2 seasons of residential use.
  • Installation is moderate. You’ll need a socket set, a torque wrench (tighten pulley nut to 30–40 ft-lbs), and possibly a puller to remove the old spindle. Watch for stripped bolts on older decks.
  • Common gotcha: The pulley may be slightly different from your original. If your belt is worn, replace it at the same time to avoid premature wear on the new spindle.
  • No grease fittings. These are sealed units—once the bearings fail, you replace the whole assembly.

Should You Buy It

If you own a 42-inch MTD/Troy-Bilt/Cub Cadet tractor or a 60-inch ZT1 zero-turn and need a budget-friendly spindle that will handle routine mowing on a typical lawn, this is a solid choice. Avoid it if you mow commercially or on rough terrain—you’ll want a heavier-duty OEM unit for longer life.
