This is a 2-pack of 38-inch mulching blades designed for Toro TimeCutter Z zero-turn mowers and select Toro lawn tractors with a 38-inch cutting deck. They replace OEM part numbers 79-3060, 79-3061, 79-3061-03, 88-5140-03, and others, and are intended for mulching (fine-clipping grass recycling), not bagging or side discharge.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm these three things:
- Deck size: Your mower must have a 38-inch deck. Measure the blade span from tip to tip (existing blade should be exactly 38 inches).
- Model series: Fits Toro TimeCutter Z (e.g., Z4200, Z4800, Z5000) and Toro tractor models with 38-inch decks, including 17-38HXLE, 14-38HXLE, XL 380, and 380H. Also fits some Craftsman and Huskee units using the same blade pattern.
- Center hole & offset: The center hole is 7/8-inch diameter. These are multi-hole blades—check that your spindle uses one of the hole patterns. The blade is offset (not flat); verify the lift direction matches your OEM blade orientation.
Critical: If your mower uses a different spindle bolt size or a non-standard center hole (e.g., 5/8-inch or 1-inch), these will not fit.
Key Things to Know
- Quality vs OEM: Aftermarket blades at ~$15 each. They are thinner than OEM Toro blades and may wear faster, especially in sandy or rocky soil. Fine for residential use; not ideal for heavy commercial cutting.
- Installation: Requires a socket wrench and torque wrench (spec: 70-90 ft-lbs). Use a blade removal tool or block the blade with wood to prevent spinning. Always lift the deck and disconnect the spark plug first.
- Mulching performance: The curved wing design creates good vacuum for fine clippings, but works best with sharp blades and dry grass. Dull faster than OEM if you hit debris.
- Common gotcha: These blades are not symmetrical—the lift wings face upward. Install with the sharp edge leading and the stamping facing the deck. Double-check that the blade spins freely after tightening.
Should You Buy It
Buy this set if you own a Toro TimeCutter Z or compatible 38-inch tractor, need a budget-friendly mulching blade replacement, and mow a residential lawn without heavy debris. Skip it if you need OEM durability for commercial use or require bagging/side-discharge blades—these are mulching-only.
