What It Is

The WORX WG850 is a corded electric dethatcher (also called a scarifier) that uses a rotating tine drum to pull dead grass (thatch) from the soil surface. It is a standalone tool, not a mower attachment, designed for small to medium lawns (up to about 1/3 acre).

Fitment & Compatibility

  • No mower attachment: The WG850 is a self-contained unit with its own 12-amp motor and 13-inch cutting width. It does not fit any mower deck or tractor.
  • Power source: Must be used within 100 feet of a standard 120V outdoor outlet. A heavy-duty extension cord (14-gauge or lower) is required for runs over 50 feet.
  • Grass type: Works best on cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) and common warm-season types (Bermuda, Zoysia). Avoid use on St. Augustine or centipede grass, as the aggressive tines can damage stolons.
  • Terrain: Accepts slight bumps but not uneven ground or rocks—tines can jam or snap on hard objects.

Key Things to Know

  • Assembly required: Comes with handle and collection bag that snap together in about 10 minutes. Tools included.
  • Cord management: The rear cord lock works, but the cord drags on the ground—use a shoulder strap or reel to prevent tangling.
  • Depth adjustment: Fixed at 3 settings (shallow, medium, deep). Deep setting can scalp thin lawns; test in an inconspicuous spot first.
  • Bag capacity: The 10-gallon collection bag fills fast (every 50-100 sq ft on heavy thatch). Plan to empty frequently or rake after.

Should You Buy It

Buy if you have a small lawn (under 5,000 sq ft) with moderate thatch buildup and want a dedicated, affordable dethatcher that doesn’t require a tractor. Skip it if your lawn is larger than 1/3 acre, has heavy clay soil, or you need a combined aerator/dethatcher—this unit is strictly for thatch removal.
