The Suchtale 48-inch tow-behind dethatcher is a large-area lawn tool designed to pull thatch (dead grass, roots, and debris) out of your lawn. It attaches to a riding lawn mower or garden tractor via a standard hitch pin, making it suitable for lawns 1+ acres where push dethatchers aren’t practical.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Hitch Type: Requires a standard 1/2-inch hitch pin hole on your mower’s rear drawbar. Most riding mowers (John Deere, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, Troy-Bilt, etc.) have this, but verify your tractor has a rear hitch plate—some zero-turns and small lawn tractors may not.
- Deck Size: Works best with mower decks 42–54 inches. A smaller deck (under 38 inches) may struggle to pull the 48-inch width effectively; a larger deck (60+ inches) will leave untracked strips.
- Weight & Power: The dethatcher weighs about 45 lbs. Your tractor needs at least 15–18 HP and a manual or electric PTO is not required (it’s a passive drag tool). Heavier tractors (over 400 lbs) handle it better on slopes.
- No OEM needed: This is a universal aftermarket attachment; no specific brand or model required.
Key Things to Know
- Assembly required: You’ll need to bolt the tines and wheels together. Budget 30–45 minutes, and use thread locker on the bolts—they can vibrate loose.
- Tines are spring steel but not indestructible: The 24 tines are replaceable, but hitting rocks, roots, or hard ground will bend or break them. Avoid use on very rocky or compacted soil.
- Depth adjustment: There’s a manual height pin for tine depth. Start at the highest setting, then lower gradually. Going too deep can scalp your lawn or stall the tractor.
- Not a sweeper: This is a dethatcher, not a lawn sweeper. It rakes thatch to the surface but doesn’t collect it. You’ll need to mow or rake the debris afterward.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a 1+ acre lawn with moderate thatch buildup and a riding mower with a rear hitch. It’s a budget-friendly option for annual dethatching, but skip it if your lawn is rocky, steep, or if you need a collection system—you’ll be frustrated by the extra cleanup. For the price, it’s a solid value for DIY lawn care.
