What It Is

The SporGain blade sharpener is a jig that holds your lawn mower blade at a fixed 15°–45° angle while you sharpen it with an angle grinder. It’s designed for walk-behind mower blades, both right- and left-hand, and works for most residential and light-commercial mowers.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Blade length: Fits blades up to 22 inches long; measure your blade tip-to-tip before buying.
  • Blade width: Works with blades 1.5–3 inches wide (most standard walk-behind blades).
  • Mounting hole: The center bolt must be 5/16” or 3/8” — check your mower’s spindle bolt size.
  • Blade type: Compatible with straight, mulching, and high-lift blades. Not for zero-turn or riding mower decks (blades too long or wide).
  • Angle grinder: Requires a standard 4.5” or 5” angle grinder (not included). Ensure your grinder’s guard fits within the jig’s frame.

Key Things to Know

  • Ball bearing handle reduces vibration and makes the sharpening pass smoother than fixed-handle jigs.
  • Adjustable angle stops let you dial in 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, or 45° — most mower blades sharpen best at 30°–35°.
  • Installation takes about 5 minutes — clamp the jig to a workbench, mount the blade, and run the grinder along the edge. No drilling or permanent mods.
  • Common gotcha: The jig won’t hold curved (crowned) blades securely — only flat blades. Also, you must remove the blade from the mower; this isn’t an on-mower sharpener.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you sharpen multiple mower blades per season and want consistent, repeatable bevels without guessing angles. It’s overkill if you only sharpen once a year or prefer a file — but for anyone using an angle grinder, the ball-bearing handle and adjustable frame make it a solid upgrade over cheap fixed-angle jigs.
