What It Is

The Schumacher SC1299 is a 0.8-amp automatic battery charger and maintainer designed for 12V lead-acid batteries in power sport vehicles (lawn mowers, ATVs, motorcycles), cars, and marine applications. It keeps batteries topped off during storage or slow charging small batteries.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Battery type: Works with standard flooded, AGM, gel, and deep-cycle 12V batteries (not lithium).
  • Vehicle use: Fits lawn tractors, zero-turns, riding mowers, snow blowers, and small engines with 12V batteries (typically 12–35 Ah).
  • Connector: Comes with SAE ring terminals (permanent mount) and battery clamps. Check that your battery terminals are accessible; the ring terminals require a 5/16" bolt.
  • Not for: 6V systems, large automotive batteries over 100 Ah (charging will be very slow), or lithium-ion batteries.

Key Things to Know

  • Charging speed: 0.8 amps is slow—expect 12+ hours to fully charge a dead 20 Ah lawn mower battery. It’s a maintainer, not a jump starter.
  • Installation: Mount the ring terminals directly to battery posts (remove any corrosion first). Route the SAE connector to a convenient spot for easy plug-in; no tools needed for the clamps.
  • Weather resistance: The unit is not fully waterproof—keep the connector dry or use a cover when not in use.
  • Automatic stop: It switches to float mode once fully charged, so you can leave it connected all winter without overcharging.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you need a simple, reliable maintainer for a lawn mower or small 12V battery that sits idle for weeks or months. It’s ideal for seasonal storage, but don’t expect to revive a deeply discharged battery quickly. For larger automotive batteries or faster charging, look for a 2–4 amp model.
