What It Is

This is a replacement deck wheel kit for MTD-branded lawn tractors (Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines, etc.) with 38-inch or 42-inch stamped steel decks manufactured in 2009 or earlier. The wheels prevent the mower deck from scalping the lawn on uneven terrain and reduce wear on the deck shell.

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Deck size: Only fits 38-inch and 42-inch decks. Do not use on 46-inch or larger decks.
  • Tractor brand: MTD and all MTD-owned brands (Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yard-Man, Bolens, White Outdoor, Huskee). Not compatible with John Deere, Husqvarna, or Craftsman (unless MTD-built).
  • Year range: 2009 and prior. 2010+ decks use a different wheel bracket design.
  • OEM vs aftermarket: OEM-190-183 is the genuine MTD part number. Aftermarket copies may have thinner plastic or looser fit.
  • Measurements: Each wheel is 8 inches diameter with a 5/16-inch axle hole. The bracket bolts to the deck using two 5/16-inch bolts (not always included). Check your deck for two pre-drilled holes on each side, spaced 2.5 inches apart.

Key Things to Know

  • Installation difficulty: Easy (15-30 minutes). Requires a socket wrench and possibly a drill if your deck lacks the mounting holes.
  • Quality: OEM plastic wheels are durable but not indestructible. Aftermarket wheels often crack within a season; OEM lasts 2-3 years with normal use.
  • Common gotcha: Wheels may rub against the deck if the bracket is bent or if deck height is set to the lowest position. Check clearance before tightening fully.
  • What’s included: Typically 2 wheels with brackets and hardware. Some sellers list a “kit” but only include one wheel—verify the listing says “set of 2” or “pair.”

Should You Buy It

Buy this kit if you have an MTD tractor with a 38- or 42-inch deck from 2009 or earlier and your current wheels are worn, cracked, or missing. It’s a straightforward, cost-effective fix that prevents lawn damage and deck drag. Skip it if you have a later model (2010+) or a non-MTD brand—the brackets won’t bolt up without modification.
