MTD Replacement Part Steering Wheel

What It Is

This is an OEM-style replacement steering wheel designed for MTD-branded riding lawn mowers and garden tractors. It replaces a worn, cracked, or broken steering wheel that has a 5/8-inch diameter shaft with a single flat side (D-hole) and uses a retaining bolt or nut.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, confirm these three things:

1. Shaft size: Measure your steering shaft diameter. This wheel fits a 5/8-inch shaft with a single flat side (not splined or keyed). If your shaft is 3/4-inch or splined, this won’t work.
2. Mounting method: This wheel uses a center bolt or nut (usually 5/16-18 or 3/8-16 thread). Check if your original wheel was held by a bolt through the top or a nut under the center cap.
3. Brand/model: Fits most MTD, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Yard Machines, and Craftsman models with a 5/8-inch D-shaft. Verify your model number on MTD’s parts lookup or by measuring the shaft.

Not compatible with zero-turn mowers or older tractors using a tapered or keyed shaft.

Key Things to Know

• Quality: Thick rubber/plastic grip, not foam. Holds up better than OEM in sun/rain but can still crack if overtightened.
• Installation: Easy—remove center cap, unscrew old bolt, pull wheel off (may need a puller if stuck), align flat side, push on, tighten bolt to 15-20 ft-lbs. No special tools.
• Common gotcha: The flat on the shaft must align perfectly with the flat in the wheel hub. If it’s slightly off, the wheel won’t sit flush and may wobble. Use a file to clean up any burrs on the shaft.
• Center cap: May not match your original cap color or design. Cap is included but generic.
