This is a set of three abrasive stones designed to mount into any standard power drill, allowing you to sharpen dull lawn mower blades without removing them from the deck. It’s for residential push mowers, riding mowers, and small tractor decks where you want a quick touch-up between full removals.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Drill compatibility: Works with any hand drill that has a 3/8-inch or larger chuck. No special adapter needed.
- Blade type: Best for standard steel blades (flat or slightly curved). Not for mulching blades with deep serrations, high-lift blades, or blades with hardened coatings.
- Deck size: Universal fit—works on 20-inch to 54-inch decks, but the stone’s effective reach is limited to about 6 inches from the edge. For wider decks, you’ll need to reposition the drill multiple times.
- OEM vs aftermarket: No fitment issues with brand—works on any standard blade that is not too thin (less than 1/8 inch) or too thick (over 1/4 inch).
- What to measure: Blade thickness (1/8”–1/4” is safe) and the angle of the cutting edge (typically 30–45 degrees). The stone’s flat face works best on blades with a consistent bevel.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: Stones are abrasive and wear down after 3–5 sharpenings. They are not diamond-grade. Expect moderate lifespan for the $10 price.
- Installation difficulty: Very easy—insert into drill chuck, tighten, and run along the blade edge at a shallow angle. No disassembly needed, but you must secure the mower (blade stop, disconnect spark plug).
- Common gotchas: The stone can chip or crack if you apply too much pressure or hit the blade tip at a steep angle. Also, without removing the blade, you cannot sharpen the backside of a double-bevel blade. This tool only sharpens the top side.
- Safety: Always wear eye protection and gloves. The stone can throw small debris.
Should You Buy It
If you want a quick, cheap way to restore a dull blade without removing it, this kit works for occasional touch-ups on standard steel blades. It’s not for heavy-duty sharpening, mulching blades, or blades with severe nicks. At $10, it’s a reasonable backup but not a replacement for a proper bench grinder or file. Best for homeowners who mow once a week and need a 5-minute fix.
