This is a two-in-one lawn mower blade sharpener and balancer kit. It’s designed for sharpening dull mower blades and then balancing them to reduce vibration during mowing. Works with push mowers, riding mowers, and zero-turn mowers using standard 15°–45° blade bevels.
Fitment & Compatibility
Check these three things before buying:
- Blade center hole size: The balancer uses a magnetic cone that fits most standard center holes (typically 5/8” to 1”), but measure yours. If your blade has an odd-shaped or non-round center hole, it won’t seat properly.
- Blade angle range: The sharpener adjusts from 15° to 45°. Most walk-behind and riding mower blades use 30°–35°. Confirm your blade’s factory bevel angle (often stamped on the blade or in your mower manual). If it’s outside this range, this tool won’t work.
- Blade length: The balancer works with blades up to about 22” long. Longer blades (e.g., some commercial zero-turn decks) may overhang and be unstable. Measure from center hole to tip.
- Compatible with: Fits replacement blade models 5005 and 42-047 (often found on Craftsman, Husqvarna, and MTD). Works with most universal aftermarket blades that have a standard center hole.
Key Things to Know
- No electric sharpener: This is a manual file guide, not a grinder. You provide the file or stone. Expect 5–10 minutes per blade.
- Magnetic balancer is simple but limited: The magnet holds the blade horizontally. If the blade is heavily rusted or warped, the magnet may not hold it level. Clean the center hole area first.
- Angle adjustment is tool-free: The sharpener’s angle lock uses a thumb screw—easy to change between blades. But the plastic guide can wear over time with heavy use.
- Not for mulching or gator blades: Those have curved or serrated edges that this fixed-angle guide can’t sharpen evenly.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a standard push or riding mower with flat, straight blades (15°–45° bevel) and want a budget-friendly manual kit for occasional sharpening. Skip it if you have commercial-grade blades, mulching blades, or need an electric sharpener for high-volume work. The balancer is handy but not essential—you can also balance on a screwdriver.
