This is a stamped steel blade adapter that sits between the engine crankshaft and the mower blade on push walk-behind mowers. It centers the blade and transfers rotational force, and it’s designed for MTD-made models (MTD, Murray, Troy-Bilt, Yard Machine, Yardman, Bolens) with a 5/8” diameter, 3/16” keyed crankshaft.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm your mower has a 5/8” diameter crankshaft with a 3/16” keyway — this adapter won’t fit smaller 7/8” or larger 1” shafts. Measure the crankshaft end with a caliper if unsure. This adapter replaces OEM part numbers 748-0376, 748-0376A, 748-0376B, and 748-0376C. It fits most MTD push mowers with 21” or 22” decks from the 1990s onward, but not all — check your model number against MTD’s parts lookup (use the first 3-4 digits of your mower’s model number). It does not fit Craftsman, Husqvarna, or Honda mowers.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: Stamped steel, not cast iron. Adequate for residential use, but may wear faster under heavy commercial use or if blade is frequently unbalanced.
- Installation: Easy — remove blade bolt, slide old adapter off, install new one with key aligned, torque blade bolt to 30-40 ft-lbs. Use a thread locker if your bolt doesn’t have a nylon patch.
- Common gotcha: The adapter’s center hole is 5/8” but the pilot diameter (where the blade sits) is 1.125”. Measure your blade’s center hole — it must be at least 1.125” or the blade won’t seat.
- Fitment trick: Some MTD mowers use a different adapter (748-0376A or B) with a slightly different pilot shape — visually compare your old adapter to the photos before ordering.
Should You Buy It
If you have an MTD-made push mower (Troy-Bilt, Yard Machine, etc.) with a 5/8” keyed crankshaft and your blade adapter is worn, cracked, or stripped, this is the correct, affordable replacement for residential use. It won’t match the durability of a cast-iron OEM part, but for the price and typical homeowner mowing, it’s a solid choice.
