These are strap-on spike aerator shoes that attach to your lawn mower’s rear wheels to poke holes in soil as you mow. Designed for walk-behind mowers, they’re meant for light aeration on small lawns, gardens, or patios—not for heavy-duty turf or compacted clay.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Wheel size: Fits most standard 8–12 inch rear mower wheels. Measure your wheel’s outer diameter and width before buying.
- Attachment: Hook-and-loop straps wrap around the wheel rim. Works on any mower brand (Toro, Honda, Craftsman, etc.) as long as the wheel is round and has enough clearance around the deck and axle.
- Deck clearance: Check that the spikes (about 1.5 inches long) won’t hit the mower deck, discharge chute, or bagger when the wheel rotates. Lift the mower and spin the rear wheels by hand to test.
- No OEM spec: This is an aftermarket universal accessory—no OEM part number. If your wheels are non-standard (e.g., deep tread, odd shape), these may not hold securely.
Key Things to Know
- Installation: Easy—no tools needed. Straps are adjustable but must be pulled tight. Loose straps cause slipping or damage to the spikes.
- Spike depth: Only 1–1.5 inches deep. Good for surface-level aeration but won’t relieve severe compaction. Best used on moist, not wet, soil.
- Self-cleaning claim: Partially true—spikes shed mud as they spin, but sticky clay will still build up. Rinse after use.
- Durability: Plastic spikes with metal core. Fine for occasional use on small lawns; not for rocky or root-heavy ground. Spikes can bend or snap if you hit a rock.
Should You Buy It
Buy these if you have a small, level lawn (under 5,000 sq ft) and want a quick, low-effort way to add light aeration while mowing. They’re not a substitute for a core aerator—skip them if your soil is heavily compacted, rocky, or you need deep aeration. Works best as a seasonal maintenance tool for casual users.
