What It Is

This is a two-piece anti-scalp kit for Scag zero-turn and stand-on mowers: a set of deck brackets (OEM 422478) and a roller kit (OEM 481632). It prevents the mower deck from digging into turf on uneven ground, protecting both the grass and the deck shell.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, confirm your Scag model and deck size. This kit fits SMST, SMWC, STT52, STT61A, SFZ52, SFZP52, SWZT61, SZL48, SCR42, SCZ61RD, STC40, and STC48V decks. Measure your deck’s anti-scalp roller mounting hole spacing (center-to-center) to match the bracket design—most Scag 42–61 inch decks use the same pattern, but older or custom decks may differ. This is an aftermarket replacement for OEM parts 422478 (bracket) and 481632 (roller). If your current rollers are worn or missing, this is a direct swap.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality: Brackets are stamped steel with a black powder coat; rollers are hard rubber over a steel bushing. Adequate for residential and light commercial use, but not as thick as OEM Scag castings.
  • Installation: Moderate difficulty. You’ll need a 1/2-inch socket and wrench to remove the old bracket bolts. The roller slides onto the bracket stud and is secured with a cotter pin—no special tools required. Expect 20–30 minutes per side.
  • Gotchas: Verify your deck has threaded holes for the bracket bolts. Some Scag decks use weld nuts, others use through-bolts with lock nuts. If yours uses through-bolts, you’ll need to buy them separately (not included). Also, the roller diameter is slightly smaller than OEM (about 3.75 vs 4 inches), which can reduce anti-scalp clearance on very bumpy terrain.

Should You Buy It

If you own one of the listed Scag mowers and your existing anti-scalp rollers are cracked, flat, or missing, this is a solid budget-friendly fix. It’s not built for heavy commercial abuse (the thinner bracket may bend over sharp curbs), but for homeowner or light commercial use on lawns with moderate dips, it’ll keep your deck from scalping without the OEM price tag.
