What It Is

This HIPA kit bundles an air filter, gasket, diaphragm, and primer bulb for Briggs & Stratton 3.5–4.5 HP engines in the Classic, Sprint, and Quattro series. It’s a complete service set for walk-behind mowers, pressure washers, and small generators using these small engines.

Fitment & Compatibility

Check your engine model number (stamped on the blower housing or valve cover). This kit fits BS engines like 9T502, 10T502, 12T502, and similar. The air filter (698369) replaces OEM 495770 and 795083; the primer bulb (694394) replaces 494408. Measure your existing filter’s length and width before buying—this one is about 4.25 x 3.25 inches. Not for larger Vanguard or Intek engines. Verify your engine has a side-draft carburetor (air filter mounts horizontally on the side).

Key Things to Know

  • Quality is decent for the price – The foam filter element is less dense than OEM, but it works fine for regular residential mowing. Replace every season or after heavy dust.
  • Installation is straightforward – No special tools needed. Slide the new gasket onto the carburetor studs, press the filter in place, and reinstall the cover. The primer bulb pushes into the carburetor body—make sure it seats fully.
  • Common gotcha – The included diaphragm is for the fuel pump, not the carburetor metering diaphragm. If you need a carb rebuild kit, buy separately.
  • Check the gasket orientation – It’s symmetrical, but a misaligned gasket can cause air leaks and rough idle. Ensure it covers the carburetor intake opening completely.

Should You Buy It

If you have a small BS Classic/Sprint/Quattro engine and need a quick, affordable tune-up kit for basic maintenance, this is a solid choice. It won’t match OEM durability for heavy commercial use, but for a $9 fix to restore starting and running performance on a home mower, it’s hard to beat.
