What It Is

This is a heavy-duty PTO (Power Take-Off) clutch upgrade for John Deere X300–X500 Series lawn tractors and similar models. It engages and disengages the mower deck blades, delivering 150 ft-lb of torque (versus the OEM 105 ft-lb) with a larger bearing for increased durability under heavy use.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, confirm your tractor’s model and deck size. This clutch fits John Deere X300, X300R, X304, X305R, X310, X320, X324, X340, X360, X500, X520, X530, X534, X540, and X590 models. It replaces OEM part numbers AM141536, AM136787, and AM134397. It works with 42–54-inch mower decks (Accel Deep, Edge, and standard) that use a 1-inch shaft and 3-bolt mounting pattern. Measure your existing clutch’s bolt hole spacing and shaft diameter—this unit has a 1.125-inch bearing bore. Not compatible with X500 Series with 60-inch decks or older 200 Series tractors. If your deck uses a different pulley offset, check clearance.

Key Things to Know

  • Installation difficulty: Moderate. Requires basic mechanical skills, a puller tool for the old clutch, and a torque wrench to tighten the center bolt to 55–65 ft-lb. No special wiring changes needed if replacing a similar 2-wire clutch.
  • Torque upgrade: The 150 ft-lb rating reduces slippage on thick or wet grass, but it draws slightly more current—verify your battery and charging system are in good shape (12V, 15-amp alternator minimum).
  • Bearing life: The larger bearing spreads load better, but check the pulley alignment with the deck belt after installation—misalignment causes premature wear.
  • Common gotcha: The clutch may not fit under the stock belt guard on some X300 models; you might need to trim the guard slightly or use a spacer.

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you mow heavy, tall, or damp grass regularly, or if your OEM clutch has failed and you want a stronger, longer-lasting replacement. It’s a good value for the torque gain and bearing size, but skip it if you have a 60-inch deck or a non-compatible model—stick with the OEM part for those.
