What It Is

This is a three-in-one rebuild kit for 42-inch MTD and Troy-Bilt lawn tractor decks, combining replacement spindle assemblies, blades, and a drive belt. It’s designed to refresh the entire cutting deck’s rotating assembly on popular models like the M115-42, LT4200, T1000, T1400, T1800, Bronco, and Pony.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, verify your deck is a 42-inch stamped steel deck from an MTD-built tractor (Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Yard Machines, etc.). Check your current spindle part number—this kit replaces OEM spindles 618-06991 and 918-06991. Blades cross to 742-04308 and 942-04308. The belt is 954-04060 (typically 1/2" x 108"). Measure the belt length if possible; older decks may use a different belt path. This kit is aftermarket, not OEM, so expect slight finish differences on spindles and blades.

Key Things to Know

  • Installation is moderate. You’ll need a socket set, torque wrench, and a jack to remove the deck. Plan 1–2 hours.
  • Spindle bearings are pre-greased and sealed. No maintenance needed—just bolt on. But verify the spindle housing matches your deck’s bolt pattern (usually 3 bolts at 4.5" spacing).
  • Blades are standard-duty. Fine for residential mowing on 1–2 acres of grass. For rocky or heavy brush, upgrade to a thicker blade separately.
  • Common gotcha: The belt may be slightly tight on some decks. Loosen the idler pulley fully before routing. If it still won’t fit, double-check your deck’s belt length—some older models use a 106" belt.

Should You Buy It

If you own a 42-inch MTD or Troy-Bilt tractor with worn spindles, dull blades, or a slipping belt—and you want to do one-and-done maintenance—this kit saves money vs. buying parts individually. It’s not for commercial use or decks with odd spindle spacing, but for typical homeowner repairs, it’s a solid value.
