The All American Sharpener Model 5005 is a stationary blade sharpening system that uses an angle grinder and a guide wheel to sharpen lawn mower blades. It’s designed for walk-behind mowers, zero-turn mowers, and riding mowers with blades up to 24 inches long.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Blade length: Works with blades from 12 to 24 inches. Measure your blade tip to tip; longer blades won’t fit the guide wheel.
- Blade type: Compatible with standard single-edge, mulching, and high-lift blades. Not for serrated or notched blades (e.g., some Gator blades).
- Grinder mount: Accepts most angle grinders with a 4.5-inch or 5-inch wheel and a standard M10 or 5/8-11 arbor. Check your grinder’s arbor size and that the included mounting bracket fits your grinder’s body.
- Deck clearance: No deck fitment issues—this is a bench-mounted tool, not a mower attachment. You’ll need a sturdy workbench or table.
- OEM vs aftermarket: Works with any brand blade (OEM or aftermarket) as long as length and type match.
Key Things to Know
- Setup required: You must mount the sharpener to a bench (bolts included). The grinder is not included—you supply your own angle grinder and a sharpening wheel (diamond or abrasive).
- Adjustable guide: The wheel lets you set a consistent bevel angle (usually 30–45 degrees). Test on a scrap blade first to avoid over-grinding.
- Heat risk: Grinding generates heat; dip the blade in water every few passes to prevent temper loss (blade becomes soft and dulls faster).
- No balancing feature: After sharpening, you still need to balance the blade separately (use a blade balancer or a nail in the wall). An unbalanced blade causes vibration.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you maintain multiple mowers (commercial or large property) and want consistent, repeatable sharpening without freehanding. It’s overkill for a single homeowner mower—a $20 file or clamp-on guide is cheaper. But if you sharpen 10+ blades per season, the speed and accuracy justify the price.
