This is a complete rebuild kit for 46-inch cutting decks on select MTD-built lawn tractors, including spindles, blades, and a drive belt. It’s designed for one-stop replacement of worn deck components on mid-range residential tractors like the Craftsman T1600, Troy-Bilt Bronco 46, and similar models.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm your mower has a 46-inch stamped steel deck (not fabricated) and is from an MTD/Cub Cadet family. This kit fits Craftsman T1500, T1600, T1900, LT 4600; Troy-Bilt TB46, Bronco 46, Horse XP; and some Yard Machines/Yard-Man 46-inch models. Check your spindle bearing housing shape – this kit uses spindle assemblies with a round base and three-bolt pattern (OEM 918-06989). The blades (742-04290) are 16.5 inches long with a 1-inch center hole and 0.25-inch offset. The belt (954-04219) is 103 inches long, 1/2 inch wide. Do not assume fit for older MTD decks (pre-2005) or non-MTD brands like John Deere or Husqvarna.
Key Things to Do
- Measure your spindle bolt pattern – three bolts on a 3.25-inch circle, not the older four-bolt pattern. If you have four bolts, this kit won’t work.
- Inspect your deck shell – these spindles have a shorter shaft than some OEM versions; if your deck has a thick (0.125 inch+) spindle mounting plate, the blade may sit too low. Check blade-to-deck clearance after install.
- Belt routing matters – this is a 103-inch belt for a specific deck layout (usually with a fixed center pulley). If your deck uses a 104-inch or 102-inch belt, this won’t fit. Count belt ribs: this is a single V-belt, not a multi-rib.
- Lubricate spindle bearings – the kit comes with pre-greased bearings, but adding a dab of grease to the top bearing cavity during installation extends life.
Should You Buy It
This kit makes sense if you’re replacing all three wear items at once on a compatible 46-inch MTD tractor and want a parts-matched set. It’s a good value compared to buying spindles, blades, and belt separately from OEM, but skip it if your spindles are the four-bolt style or your deck shell is unusually thick. For a quick refresh on a common residential mower, it’s a solid, time-saving buy.
