What It Is

This is a replacement deck drive belt for 42-inch cutting decks on select Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, and MTD riding mowers. It transfers power from the engine pulley to the spindle blades, and is a direct replacement for OEM belts with part numbers 954-04060B, 754-04060B, and 754-04060C.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, confirm your mower has a 42-inch stamped deck (not fabricated). This belt fits:

  • Troy-Bilt: Pony, Bronco, TB42, TB46 models (2005–2018)
  • Cub Cadet: LT1040, LT1042, LTX1042, LT1046, and similar 42" deck models
  • MTD Gold Lawn Tractors with 42" side-discharge decks
  • Roper, Yard-Man, and Yard Machines with the same deck platform

Measure your old belt: it must be 1/2 inch wide and 96.5 inches long (outside circumference). If your belt is 96 inches or 97 inches, this will not fit. Check the stamped part number on your old belt’s side; if it ends in 04060A or 04060, this is the updated replacement.

Key Things to Do

  • Check for wear first – If the belt is slipping or frayed, also inspect the deck pulleys and spindle bearings. A bad pulley destroys a new belt quickly.
  • Installation difficulty – Moderate. You’ll need to remove the deck or at least the belt guard. Route the belt exactly as the diagram under your deck shows; misrouting causes rapid wear or blade disengagement.
  • Quality note – This is an OEM Cub Cadet belt, not a generic aftermarket. It’s Kevlar-reinforced and should last 2–3 seasons under normal use. Cheaper belts often stretch or crack sooner.
  • Common gotcha – The belt is tight. Use a 1/2-inch breaker bar on the idler pulley to relieve tension during installation. Do not pry the belt on with a screwdriver—it damages the cord.

Should You Buy It

If you need a direct OEM replacement for a 42-inch Troy-Bilt or Cub Cadet deck and want reliable, long-lasting performance, this belt is a solid choice at $12.99. It’s not for generic or universal fit—stick with this if your mower is on the compatibility list.
