This drive control cable engages and disengages the self-propel drive system on walk-behind mowers. It’s designed for Craftsman, Poulan Pro, and Husqvarna models—typically those with a 21–22 inch deck and a cable-actuated rear-wheel drive.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm three things:
-
Model number – Check your mower’s model tag (usually under the seat or on the deck). This cable replaces OEM part numbers 424919, 532439452, and 583415801. It fits many Craftsman, Poulan Pro, and Husqvarna self-propelled mowers, but not all—cross-reference your model with these OEM numbers.
-
Cable length – The overall cable is about 42–44 inches. Measure your old cable from end to end (including sheathing). If your cable is significantly longer or shorter, this won’t work.
-
End fittings – Both ends are standard “Z” or “L” shaped hooks. Verify your mower’s handle lever and drive bracket accept these hooks. Some newer models use a threaded barrel adjuster—this cable does not have one.
Key Things to Know
- Quality – This is an aftermarket cable, not OEM. It works fine for most users, but the sheathing may be slightly stiffer than original, which can make the pull feel a bit heavier.
- Installation difficulty – Moderate. You’ll need to remove the handle cover, unhook the old cable from the lever and drive bracket, route the new cable through the same clips, and reattach. Plan 20–40 minutes.
- Common gotcha – The cable housing end ferrules (the metal stops) may need to be crimped slightly with pliers to fit snugly into the handle bracket. If loose, the cable can slip out of position.
- Adjustment – After installation, you may need to adjust cable tension by repositioning the cable stop on the drive bracket. Too loose = no drive engagement; too tight = constant drive.
Should You Buy It
If your mower’s OEM cable is broken or stretched, and you’ve confirmed the part numbers or cable length match, this is a solid budget fix. It’s not the highest quality, but at $12.79 it’s a fraction of the OEM cost and will restore self-propel function reliably for a season or two. Skip it if you need a threaded adjuster or a cable for a front-wheel drive mower.
