What It Is

A 12V, 3-terminal starter solenoid that bridges the battery to the starter motor when you turn the key. This aftermarket part replaces OEM numbers on most riding mowers and zero-turn mowers from Husqvarna, Stens, Trombetta, and others.

Fitment & Compatibility

Before buying, check these three things:

  • Terminal layout: Must be a 3-terminal (small spade + two large studs) solenoid. Measure center-to-center distance of the large studs—typically about 1.5 inches on this model.
  • OEM cross-reference: Confirmed fits Husqvarna 539101714, Stens 435-700, Trombetta 812-1221-211, and replaces 854-1221-210, 93265-9, 93265WR. Also works on many Craftsman, John Deere, MTD, and Ariens riders/zero-turns.
  • Mounting holes: Two holes on a flat bracket, usually 3.5 inches apart. Verify your existing solenoid’s bracket pattern—some older models use a different spacing.
  • Voltage: Strictly 12V DC. Do not use on 6V systems.

Key Things to Know

  • Quality is adequate for the price – This is a budget aftermarket part. It works, but the plastic housing is less durable than premium OEM solenoids. Expect 2–3 seasons in normal use.
  • Installation is straightforward – Disconnect battery negative first. Remove the two large wires (battery + and starter) and the small trigger wire. Mount with two bolts. Torque large stud nuts to 6–8 ft-lbs—overtightening cracks the plastic.
  • Common gotcha: intermittent clicking – If the solenoid clicks but the starter doesn’t engage, check ground connections and battery voltage (must be above 12.4V). A weak battery mimics a failed solenoid.
  • No diode or resistor included – This solenoid doesn’t have a built-in suppression diode. On some zero-turns, you may need to add one if your wiring harness expects it (check your old solenoid).

Should You Buy It

Buy this if you need a quick, cheap fix for a dead solenoid on a standard rider or zero-turn and you’re comfortable with basic wiring. Skip it if you’re restoring a vintage mower, need a heavy-duty or waterproof unit, or want OEM durability for commercial use—spend $15–20 on a Trombetta or Stens branded equivalent instead.
