This is a 40-inch tow-behind dethatcher for riding mowers and lawn tractors, designed to pull thatch (dead grass, moss) from lawns using 20 heat-treated, rust-proof tines. It’s for medium to large yards where a walk-behind dethatcher would be too slow.
Fitment & Compatibility
- Hitch type: Requires a standard 1-7/8 inch or 2-inch hitch pin (most riding mowers accept this). Check that your mower’s hitch bracket is rated for towing—light-duty garden tractors or zero-turns with a receiver hitch work best.
- Deck clearance: The dethatcher’s frame sits behind the mower, so no deck interference. But measure your mower’s rear clearance—if you have a tight turning radius, the dethatcher may drag on slopes or sharp turns.
- Weight limit: This unit weighs ~35 lbs empty; add tine pressure for effective thatch removal. Ensure your mower can handle the load (most lawn tractors over 12 HP are fine).
- OEM vs aftermarket: No OEM equivalent—this is a universal aftermarket part. Works with any brand (John Deere, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, etc.) as long as the hitch fits.
Key Things to Know
- Tine depth is adjustable via a height pin—start at the highest setting to avoid scalping uneven lawns, then lower gradually.
- Assembly required (wrenches, no welding). Takes about 20 minutes; follow the included diagram carefully—tine spacing is pre-set, but check bolt tightness after first use.
- Heat-treated tines are replaceable individually if bent or broken; buy spare tine packs separately (they’re standard 1/4-inch diameter).
- Does NOT aerate—it only rakes thatch. For compacted soil, you need a core aerator. This is purely a surface tool.
Should You Buy It
Buy this if you have a riding mower with a standard hitch, a lawn over 1/2 acre with noticeable thatch (over 1/2 inch thick), and you want a budget-friendly way to dethatch without renting a machine. Skip it if your lawn is small (under 1/4 acre)—a walk-behind dethatcher or a manual rake will be easier.
