This is a 12V starter solenoid (part #04781700) that acts as a high-current relay between your battery and starter motor. It’s designed for Gravely and Ariens zero-turn mowers, specifically the Zoom, IKON, ZTX, and ZT XL series.
Fitment & Compatibility
Before buying, confirm three things:
- Model number: Works with Gravely models like 915227, 915228, 915229 (Zoom series) and Ariens models like 915230, 915231, 915232 (IKON/ZTX). Check your mower’s data tag for a model number that starts with 915 or similar.
- Voltage & terminal layout: Must be 12V. The solenoid has three terminals: two small spade terminals (trigger/ground) and one large bolt for battery +, one large bolt for starter. Measure the distance between the two large bolt centers—should be roughly 1.25 inches (32mm). If your existing solenoid has a different bolt spacing, this won’t bolt in.
- OEM cross-reference: This aftermarket part replaces OEM Gravely/Ariens part 04781700. It is not a genuine OEM part, so expect slightly different plastic housing or bracket orientation. Compare your old solenoid’s bracket shape and mounting hole pattern before ordering.
Key Things to Know
- Quality: At $10, this is a budget aftermarket solenoid. It will work for most users, but some report shorter lifespan than OEM (1-2 seasons vs 3-4). If you mow commercially, consider OEM.
- Installation difficulty: Easy—disconnect battery negative, remove two bolts, swap wires one at a time to avoid mix-ups. Takes 10 minutes.
- Common gotcha: The small trigger wire (usually red) and ground wire (usually black) may be reversed on some mowers. If the solenoid clicks but the starter doesn’t spin, swap those two small wires.
- Bracket fit: The aftermarket bracket may be slightly thicker or thinner than OEM. If it doesn’t sit flush, add a washer to shim it—do not overtighten or you’ll crack the housing.
Should You Buy It
If your Gravely or Ariens zero-turn’s solenoid is dead and you’re looking for a no-fuss, cheap replacement to get mowing again, this is a fine choice. It’s not built for heavy commercial abuse, but for a homeowner or light-use machine, it’ll save you $30–40 vs. OEM. Just double-check your terminal spacing and wire layout before you install.
