Mower Deck Scalping the Lawn: Causes & Fixes

Quick Diagnosis (most common cause first)

Scalping—where the mower deck cuts into the soil, leaving bare patches—is almost always a setup or terrain issue, not a mechanical failure. The most common cause is uneven tire pressure. If one rear tire is low, the deck tilts, and the low side digs in. Check this first:

  1. Tire pressure – Inflate all four tires to the PSI listed on the sidewall (usually 14–20 PSI for push mowers, 20–40 PSI for riders). Even a 5 PSI difference can tilt the deck by ½ inch.
  2. Deck leveling – If tires are fine, the deck itself is likely unlevel. On a flat surface, measure from the blade tip to the ground at each corner. The front should be ⅛–¼ inch lower than the rear (to avoid scalping on bumps), and the left/right should match within ⅛ inch.
  3. Terrain – If you’re mowing over bumps, roots, or ruts, the deck may be set too low. Raise the cutting height to 3–4 inches for uneven ground.

Safety first: Before any adjustments, disconnect the spark plug (or remove the battery on electric mowers). Blades can spin from residual energy or accidental engagement.

Step-by-Step Fixes (ordered easiest→hardest, with what to check)

1. Check and Adjust Tire Pressure

  • Use a tire gauge (not the “looks okay” method).
  • Inflate to spec. If a tire won’t hold air, patch or replace it.
  • Re-check deck height after inflation.

2. Level the Deck (Push Mowers)

  • Park on a flat, hard surface (driveway or garage floor).
  • Disconnect spark plug.
  • Rotate the blade so it points side-to-side. Measure from the blade tip to the ground at each end.
  • Adjust the deck’s height-adjustment linkage or front/rear axle bolts. Most push mowers have a single lever for height; some have separate front/rear adjusters.
  • Aim for front ⅛" lower than rear. Repeat with blade pointing front-to-back.

3. Level the Deck (Riding Mowers)

  • Park on level ground, blades disengaged, engine off.
  • Remove battery negative cable or spark plug wire.
  • Locate the deck lift linkage (often a turnbuckle or threaded rod on each side).
  • Measure from the blade tip to ground at front and rear of the deck. Adjust the turnbuckles to get front ⅛–¼" lower than rear.
  • Then check side-to-side: if one side is lower, adjust the lift arm or anti-scalp wheel height.

4. Adjust Anti-Scalp Wheels

  • Most rider decks have small wheels near the corners. They should be set ¼–½ inch above the ground when the deck is at your normal cutting height.
  • If they’re too high, they won’t prevent scalping on dips. If too low, they’ll gouge the lawn.
  • Loosen the nut, slide the wheel up or down, retighten.

5. Check Blade Condition

  • Dull or bent blades can cause uneven cutting and “chatter” that digs in.
  • Remove blades (wear gloves, blades are sharp). Inspect for bends, cracks, or excessive wear.
  • Sharpen or replace. Reinstall with the sharp edge facing the direction of rotation (usually clockwise when viewed from above).

6. Inspect Deck Spindles and Bearings

  • Worn spindles cause blade wobble, which can make the deck bounce and scalp.
  • With blades off, grasp the spindle pulley and try to wiggle it. If there’s play, replace the spindle assembly.
  • Also check the deck shell for cracks or rust holes that could let a blade drop lower than intended.

When It’s a Part You Need to Replace (name the part)

Scalping rarely requires parts unless you’ve ruled out adjustments. Replace these if faulty:

  • Anti-scalp wheels – If they’re cracked, worn flat, or missing, replace them. Generic 4-inch or 6-inch wheels fit most decks.
  • Deck leveling turnbuckles or lift links – Bent or stripped threads won’t hold adjustment. Replace with OEM or universal adjustable links.
  • Spindle assembly – If the bearing is rough or the housing is bent, replace the entire spindle (not just the bearing—it’s usually cheaper and safer).
  • Blade adapter – A worn or bent adapter can tilt the blade. Replace if the blade wobbles even after tightening the bolt.
  • Tires – A low tire is a cheap fix, but a tire that won’t hold air or is badly cupped should be replaced (or use a tube inside a split tire).

Note: Never try to straighten a bent blade or spindle. Metal fatigue can cause catastrophic failure at high RPM.

When to See a Pro

DIY fixes cover 95% of scalping issues. See a professional if:

  • You’ve done all the above and scalping persists. The deck may be warped (common on older stamped-steel decks) or the mower frame may be bent from a collision.
  • The deck has a deep crack or hole that needs welding. Welding thin steel without warping it further is tricky.
  • You suspect a transmission or drive issue (e.g., one wheel drags, causing the deck to drag). This requires specialized tools and alignment.
  • The mower is under warranty – DIY adjustments can void coverage. Let the dealer handle it.
  • You’re not comfortable with safety – If you can’t safely lift the mower, remove blades, or work near fuel lines, a pro is worth the $50–$100 diagnostic fee.

Prevention

  • Check tire pressure monthly during mowing season. Write the PSI on the tire with a marker.
  • Level the deck twice a year (spring and mid-summer). Grass clumping and debris can shift linkage over time.
  • Mow at the right height – Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade length. Scalping often happens when you cut too short in a single pass.
  • Avoid wet grass – Wet turf is softer and more prone to gouging. Wet clippings also build up under the deck, throwing off balance.
  • Clean under the deck after every use. A caked-on layer of grass adds weight and can tilt the deck. Use a scraper or pressure washer (avoid bearings).
  • Inspect anti-scalp wheels for wear each season. Replace them before they’re flat.
