Quick Diagnosis (most common cause first)
If your lawn mower is overheating, the most likely culprit is debris blocking the cooling fins or air intake. Grass clippings, dirt, and leaves accumulate under the engine shroud, preventing airflow that cools the cylinder and head. This is especially common in side-discharge mowers and during dry, dusty conditions.
Second most common cause: Dirty or clogged air filter. A restricted air filter creates a rich fuel mixture (too much fuel, not enough air), which burns hotter and can cause the engine to overheat.
Third most common: Low engine oil level or old, degraded oil. Oil lubricates and helps dissipate heat. Low oil or oil that’s lost its viscosity leads to increased friction and heat buildup.
Less common but serious: Muffler or exhaust blockage (from a nest, mud, or carbon buildup) or governor/fuel system issues causing the engine to run too fast or lean.
Safety first: Before any inspection, disconnect the spark plug wire (and battery if electric start) to prevent accidental starting. Let the engine cool completely (30+ minutes) before touching any hot surfaces.
Step-by-Step Fixes (ordered easiest→hardest, with what to check)
1. Check and clean the cooling system
- What to do: Remove the engine shroud (usually held by a few bolts or clips). Use a brush, compressed air, or a shop vac to remove all debris from the cooling fins on the cylinder, flywheel, and around the muffler.
- Check for: Thick mats of grass, hardened dirt, or even mouse nests.
- Reassemble and test mow for 5 minutes. If overheating stops, you’re done.
2. Inspect and replace the air filter
- What to do: Remove the air filter cover and take out the filter. If it’s paper, hold it up to light—if you can’t see through it, replace it. If it’s foam, wash it in soapy water, rinse, dry, and lightly oil it (if manufacturer specifies).
- Check for: Cracks, tears, or heavy dirt. A dirty filter is the #2 cause of overheating.
3. Change the oil (if low or old)
- What to do: Check oil level with the dipstick (engine cold, mower level). If low, add the correct viscosity (usually SAE 30 or 10W-30). If oil is dark, gritty, or smells burnt, drain and replace it.

- Head gasket – If you see oil leaks, loss of compression, or white smoke from exhaust. This is a more involved repair.
- Cooling fan/flywheel – If broken or missing fins (rare, but possible). The fan is part of the flywheel on most mowers.
Important: Always use manufacturer-specified parts (check model number). Generic parts may not fit or cool properly.

Take the mower to a small-engine repair shop if:
- You’ve tried all the above steps and the mower still overheats within 5 minutes.
- Symptoms point to internal engine damage: knocking noise, metal shavings in oil, or continuous white/blue smoke (burning oil).
